WIL-ALT-65. Here is an original photo that I took while riding in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train from Harrisburg to Altoona during August of 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #4896 and #4880. Both are GG-1's built in Juniata; #4896 was built during April of 1940, but #4880 was built during February of 1939. Tjey are parked on the Locomotive Ready Tracks just West of the Harrisburg Passenger Station, awaiting the call for their next runs eastward. Also visible on the right is PRR #999;00, a former steam locomotive tender that has been relegated to Maintenance-of-Way service. Instead of supplying a steam locomotive with water, it's now filled with fuel oil to replenish the steam-heat boilers in GG-1 electrics. |

It was published originally on the back cover of Mike Schaffer & Brian Solomon's (1997) book entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad." Partial Caption: "Two symbols of the Pennsylvania Railroad stand side by side at South Amboy, N.J., in 1954." Partially visible here (L to R) are PRR engines #1361 and #4881. #1361 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, then withdrawn from service and disassembled due to safety concerns, and still not reassembled to wholeness. 4883 -- the last operating NJT GG-1 to wear single-stripe PRR livery --- slips through the industrial scene at Harrison, New Jersey, on a rainy morning in 1983. Although shes battered and will be scrapped in 1986, this moment finds 4883 undaunted. Her consist is a solid train of PRR coaches Squint your eyes and it could be 1963, not 1983.. |
