Album Info:
A regular feature in Railroad Magazine during the last years of steam was reports of where steam could be found. In the April 1955 issue I learned Eastern Gas & Fuel in Everett, which adjoins Boston, MA was using steam. I drove to their office, asked to see the engines, and was given a hard hat and escorted around the engine house. Unfortunately I used Anscochrome which faded badly and the area was too cramped for good shots. There were four engines in steam at the engine house and at least one more engine working the plant tracks which were extensive. EG&F, previously New England Fuel & Transportation or New England Gas & Coke, owned nine engines; five (1-5) were 0-6-0's and four (6-9) were 0-8-0's, the latter built by ALCO from 1926 to 1929. When I visited EG&F was the 265th largest company in the US and had 10,000 employees in all its locations. The date I was there is from memory and approximate.
